Frequently asked questions about marine display regeneration

Why regenerate the instrument instead of replacing it?

Replacing an older marine instrument with a new-generation model can be very expensive, especially when compatibility with sensors, wiring, onboard networks and other already-installed instruments must be maintained.

Finding a new instrument from the same generation is often difficult or impossible. Buying a used unit can also be risky: there’s no way to know for certain how it was stored, how many hours it worked, or whether it has already suffered from moisture, water ingress or display deterioration.

Regeneration therefore lets you keep your original instrument, avoiding invasive changes to the onboard system.

How long does the service take?

Once we receive the instrument at our lab in Turin, the work is normally completed within 7 working days.

Timing may vary depending on the lab’s workload, the complexity of the instrument and the availability of the necessary materials.

Is the service guaranteed?

Yes. When we receive the instrument, we carry out a preliminary check to determine whether the display can actually be regenerated.

If it turns out not to be possible, no technical inspection or labour costs will be charged. The customer will only bear the cost, if any, of return shipping for the unrepaired instrument.

When regeneration is technically possible, we carry out the full service and provide a 12-month warranty on the work performed and on the regenerated display.

The warranty does not cover unrelated faults, subsequent water ingress, accidental damage, electronic issues or defects unconnected to the service performed.

Can you pick up the instrument from my home?

Yes. You can choose to use our home pickup service via UPS courier, or arrange the shipping yourself.

If the pickup is organised by RigeneraVision, only the shipping cost will be requested upfront.

How long have you been regenerating displays?

Our electronics lab has been operating in Turin since 1998. About ten years ago we also introduced professional display regeneration among our services.

Thanks to the experience gained, around 95% of the instruments we receive with problems related to display deterioration can be successfully regenerated.

Which display defects can be fixed?

We can address numerous typical marine display defects, including:

  • dark patches or stains;
  • burnt or deteriorated polarizer;
  • faded or hard-to-read image;
  • insufficient contrast;
  • “negative display” effect;
  • bubbles, halos or yellowing;
  • deterioration caused by sun exposure;
  • reduced visibility from certain viewing angles.

Whether regeneration is possible is in any case assessed individually after receiving photographs or examining the instrument directly.

Do you also work on the glass or the outer protective cover of the instrument?

No. Our service specialises in regenerating the LCD panel and its internal optical layers.

We do not work on the glass, the transparent lens or the front part integrated into the instrument’s outer housing. Any cracks, deep scratches, clouding or breakage of the outer protection therefore cannot be resolved through our service.

Before shipping, we recommend sending us a few photos, so we can distinguish an internal display defect from deterioration of the outer glass.

Will the display return exactly as it was when new?

Our goal is to restore proper readability and achieve the best possible aesthetic result.

On very old instruments, however, slight differences in tone, contrast or uniformity may remain compared with the original display when freshly manufactured. Any such differences depend on the age of the LCD panel, its internal condition and the availability of compatible optical materials.

Do I need to send the entire instrument?

In most cases, yes. To carry out the work correctly we need the complete instrument, so we can check the display, reassemble it and, when possible, perform a final test.

Please do not send brackets, covers, cables or other accessories that are not needed, unless we tell you otherwise.

Can you help even if the instrument doesn’t turn on?

We can also examine instruments that don’t turn on, but the lack of power-up could be due to an electronic fault unrelated to the display.

Display regeneration and electronic repair are different services. Before shipping, it is therefore important to describe the fault you have found as precisely as possible.

How can I find out in advance if my instrument can be regenerated?

You can send us clear photos of the instrument switched on and off, indicating the brand, model and the fault you’ve noticed.

In many cases we can provide an initial remote assessment. Final confirmation, however, is only given after opening and analysing the instrument in our lab.

Do I need to request a quote before shipping?

It’s advisable to contact us before sending your instrument, indicating brand and model and attaching a few photos of the display.

This way we can check whether we’ve already worked on that model, provide a cost estimate and give you the correct shipping instructions.

How should I pack the instrument?

The instrument should be protected with several layers of shock-absorbing material and placed inside a rigid box of suitable size.

It’s important to prevent it from moving inside the package. We also recommend paying particular attention to protecting the front glass, the connectors and any protruding parts.

Does regeneration restore the instrument’s water resistance?

During the service we pay particular attention to correctly reassembling the instrument and its gaskets.

However, on very old devices it is not always possible to guarantee restoration of the water-resistance characteristics originally declared by the manufacturer, especially when the housing, gaskets or plastic parts are deformed, hardened or deteriorated.

Do you work on instruments that have suffered water ingress?

Yes, but a prior assessment is needed.

Moisture or salt water can damage not only the display, but also electronic circuits, connectors and internal tracks. In these cases, regenerating the display alone might not be enough to restore the instrument’s correct operation.

Will my stored data and settings be erased?

Display regeneration normally does not cause the instrument’s settings to be erased.

However, we cannot guarantee data will be preserved in the presence of electronic faults, deteriorated memory chips, or instruments that require further technical work.

Do you also work with professional customers?

Yes. We work with private individuals, boatyards, workshops, installers, boat storage facilities, dealers and electronics labs.

For high volumes or ongoing partnerships, dedicated terms can be arranged on request.

How can I request the regeneration service?

Contact us indicating:

  • brand and model of the instrument;
  • description of the fault;
  • photos of the display switched on and off;
  • any traces of moisture or water ingress;
  • the location the shipment will be sent from.

After an initial assessment, we’ll provide instructions for either delivering it directly to our lab or arranging a courier pickup.

We repair many other models. Contact our technicians for a free assessment.
